Natural Attraction

Revolworks

If you build it, they will come.
— Field of Dreams

Acts 2
Acts 4
John 17

No one sees a feuding couple and says, “I want that!” No one thinks, “I can’t wait to have a distant and dead marriage where both of us live on opposite ends of the house and rarely speak.” The same holds true for friends or teams or groups that treat one another coldly. It’s just not a pretty sight.

People do see couples love each other and say, “I want what they have.”

People see organizations where individuals are valued, celebrated, and say, “I want to work there.” This happens innately. When people come together to love one another, others are drawn to them.

No marketing degree from Berkley or Chicago is needed to understand this attraction. You want a business ranked in the top 100 companies to work for? Care about the employees. Look at Fortune’s top ten companies for which to work. They each do something exceptional to show employees that they are valued.

Do you want your children to have a successful marriage? Stand and model such a relationship yourself. Chances are their vision for marriage will come from what they see their parents do.

Do you want people to want what you teach? Do you want to “add to your numbers” or “reach more”? Love those around you, and others will come. If you gauge your “success” by numbers because of your capitalist upbringing, question this. Maybe you need only attract one. You can’t talk deeply with 1,000 anyway.

If you fancy yourself a teacher, you need students. The best students, however, turn out to be those who seek out their teacher. They want to learn. Chase as you will those whom you think need to learn, and you’ll find hard heads and deaf ears. Find one who has approached you, and you have someone who’s ready to learn, to grow. The question is how you find one.

Again, we return to love. To find the one, love the co-worker in your office, the wife of your youth, or the friend from high school. Others will come.

If you’re in the church business, this principle holds. Jesus said it long before “Field of Dreams.” Jesus originally said the movie’s famous line in John 13:35 and 17:23: “By this all men will know you are my disciples, if you have love one for another”; “that they may be perfected in unity, so that the whole world may know that you sent me, and loved them, even as you have loved me.”

“If you love, others will come to you.”

Are you trying to reach others from something? What? And why?
How do you try to reach others?
What specific ways do you want to make your cause magnetic?
